Description
:

Social and emotional learning (SEL) and mental health play crucial roles in promoting the overall well-being and academic success. The AASA Mental Health and SEL Summit will bring educational leaders and advocates across the country together to explore the latest data, research and trends around SEL and the mental health needs of students and school communities at-large.

The Mental Health and Social and Emotional Learning Summit in California, April 17-19, is open to all who would like to attend. We will visit San Ramon Valley Unified School District (SRVUSD), recognized as an AASA Learning 2025 “Lighthouse” systems for excellence in creating student-centered, equity-focused, and future-driven educational systems that serve ALL learners and as a model of positive change in public education.

Located in the San Francisco Bay Area, SRVUSD stands among the highest- achieving school districts in California. While the district has a strong foundation of academic excellence, it recognizes that many students still need support for their social and emotional well-being. By focusing on the intersection of deep learning, social emotional well-being and equity, the district’s goal is to support staff in understanding the importance of addressing the needs of the whole learner, including social-emotional, physical, cognitive, and academic growth and development.

The Summit's keynote speakers include Dr. Taryn Marie Stejskal, presenting on the morning of the 17th, and Steve Young, scheduled to speak from 11:00 a.m. to noon on the 19th.

Dr. Taryn Marie Stejskal is the former head of Nike's Global Executive Leadership Development program and the Founder and Chief Resilience Officer (CRO) of the Resilience Leadership Institute (RLI). Dr. Stejskal is a globally recognized expert on resilience, mental health, and well-being in both leadership and personal life. Her overarching mission is to positively influence the lives of 1 billion individuals by fostering hope, healing, health, and heightened consciousness through resilience practices. Her most recent book, "The Five Practices of Highly Resilient People," is a #1 Wall Street Journal bestseller. Dr. Stejskal's impactful work has garnered attention from major news outlets, including Fox and NBC News, Bloomberg Business, Thrive Global, and Forbes. The LA Progressive magazine has dubbed her "the go-to person" and "a secret weapon" for individuals leading effective teams.

Steve Young
enjoyed a distinguished professional football career that extended over fifteen years in the NFL, predominantly with the San Francisco 49ers. During this period, he garnered numerous accolades, including the Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl XXIX, the titles of Sports Illustrated and Sporting News' Player of the Year from 1992 to 1994, and the NFL's Most Valuable Player for the years 1992 and 1994. In 2005, he was honored with induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, marking the first time a left-handed quarterback received such recognition. Regarded as the highest-rated quarterback in NFL history, Steve Young stands as the lone signal caller in league history to clinch four consecutive NFL passing titles.
Beyond his NFL career, Mr. Young has achieved success in various ventures. Notably, he served as a member of Northgate Capital, LLC, the general partner of Northgate Capital Partners, L.P. Additionally, he founded and chaired the Forever Young Foundation Charity and currently holds the position of Managing Director and Co-founder of HGGC. Steve's most remarkable victories, however, transcend the public sphere, reflecting deeply personal triumphs achieved away from the spotlight. His candid memoir narrates the journey of a Mormon youth boasting a 4.0 GPA, a photographic memory, and grappling with severe anxiety.
