State of the Superintendency
College Degrees Earned by Superintendents
School Administrator, September 2020
Nearly 44 percent of all superintendents hold either an Ed.D. or Ph.D., a figure virtually unchanged over the previous two decades, according to AASA decennial studies of the superintendency.
In the 2020 survey with its 1,215 respondents, 53 percent of those with terminal degrees were in the field of educational leadership, and another 34 percent were degrees in educational administration and supervision.
