School Administrator, September 2019

I want to let you know how much I liked the format for the June edition on MODERN PARENTING AND CHILDHOOD. The format with 11 essays was great — they were complementary but also each in its own way shared the complexity of the parenting challenges.

As the editor, Jay P. Goldman, noted in the opening piece, with the recent cheating scandal involving admissions to selective universities, you look like a genius with your issue planning.

I also was pleased to see my fellow British Columbian Kim Schonert-Reichl given the opportunity to share her interesting work on the social-emotional needs of students.

Parenthood Essays
The articles in your June issue were cogent and just the right length. I found the issue’s theme refreshing.

A Fitting Tribute
I applaud Jay P. Goldman’s words regarding the late Peter Corona in his personal tribute (June 2019) to Corona’s long affiliation with AASA and his unbroken attendance at the association’s national conventions.

Being associated with Corona over a period of some 53 years has been a true privilege. I first met him in 1966 upon my joining AASA and serving in my first superintendent position in Anacortes, Wash. His gleaming personality will remain in my memory forever and a day.

A Student Request for Help
Thank you to Marlene Johnson, superintendent in Le Sueur, Minn., for writing the My View column, “A Student Asks, ‘Can You Help Me?’” (May 2019). It was one of the most touching examples of educational leadership that I have ever read.
I appreciate that she was not afraid to share her faith in order to help others. She is an inspiration to our profession.

Campus Police
I read Joseph Meloche’s article on his school district’s use of campus police (“The Deliberate Act to Arm School Police,” April 2019) with great interest. I followed up with the author to request a copy of the district’s shared services agreement with the township police department in Cherry Hill, N.J.

We have had four school resource officers for the past 15 years in our district. We’ve not had a formal arrangement so we are looking to solidify our relationship with a more formalized agreement.
